Choosing the right litter box
Which litter box is best for your cat? Large or small, open or closed, classic or modern – we've compiled the most important tips and advice for you.
Nowadays, there are all sorts of litter boxes available, in different sizes, shapes, and designs. But how do you choose the right litter box for your cat and your home? And how many litter boxes do you actually need? In this blog post, we offer advice and share helpful tips to help you make the best choice.
How do you choose the ideal litter box?
Every cat is different. Maybe you have a playful kitten, a large Maine Coon, or perhaps a slightly shy cat. There's a litter box to suit all these different personalities. We've listed the most important considerations for you.
A Brief History of the Litter Box
The litter box is a relatively recent invention. Until the 1940s, cats often simply relieved themselves outdoors or indoors on newspapers and litter. In 1947, Edward Lowe introduced the first commercial cat litter: clay pellets originally designed to absorb urine. It was a success, and since then, the litter box has been an indispensable part of the lives of cats and their owners.
Today, there are countless variations available – from classic to high-tech. What should you consider when choosing?
Tip 1: Big enough
The litter box should be large enough for your cat to turn around and comfortably relieve itself. As a guide, use approximately 1.5 times your cat's height.
Tip 2: The right filling
There are many types of cat litter: clay pebbles, crystals, wood, recycled paper, and of course, our Hoopo® Tofu . Each type has its advantages and disadvantages. Consider dust, odor control, comfort, and durability when choosing.
Tip 3: Types of baking
Open litter boxes are affordable and easy to clean, but offer little privacy. Enclosed litter boxes reduce odor and provide peace and quiet, but some cats find them oppressive. Self-cleaning litter boxes are convenient, but more expensive and require additional maintenance.
Tip 4: The right place
Place the litter box in a quiet location, away from food and water. Cats want privacy. As a guideline, keep a distance of at least two meters from food and water bowls.
Tip 5: Always one extra
The golden rule: one litter box per cat, plus one extra. So, two boxes for one cat, three for two cats, and so on. This prevents stress and accidents outside the box.
